Sheldon Cooper's sexual orientation: other

As his 'Star Trek' hero Mr. Spock might say, this is 'fascinating.' When Chuck Lorre was asked to define Sheldon Cooper's sexual orientation on 'The Big Bang Theory,' his answer wasn't gay. It wasn't straight. Not even asexual or nonsexual or unsexual. Lorre settled on the term 'other,' for Sheldon.

Lorre told Michael Ausiello in Entertainment Weekly that Sheldon's focus is not on the physical; it's on physics. And when Ausiello asked 'Big Bang Theory' star Jim Parsons what he thought, Parsons said that the object of Sheldon's affection would be the Nobel Prize, not another human being. Hearing the word that Dr. Sheldon Cooper has been awarded the Nobel Prize in theoretical physics would be Sheldon's turn on. "That's the warm embrace that he longs for," said Jim.

This isn't the first time that questions have arisen about Sheldon's state of being. Last year there were some saying his lack of interest in human interaction was a sign that he had a form of autism called Asperger's Syndrome. Lorre and co-creator Bill Prady shot that one down, just like Lorre has blasted the notion of Sheldon's sexuality, in particular his disinterest in women, as a sign that he's gay.

While Howard, Raj and Leonard are all in need of sexual healing of the female persuasion, Sheldon's simply unmoved by sexual desire of any brand. "'Alternate reality' is another way of looking at it," said Lorre. "Characters like Sheldon are drawn to an alternate reality that might be more comforting than the ones they live in. And why modify that? Why not let the character be that unique?"

Sheldon is a unique character, and if he's like any other being we've seen and loved on TV, it might be Mr. Spock. If you recall, no matter how Nurse Chapel tried, Spock was simply uninterested in romantic entanglements. He only displayed real sexual urges in the 'Amok Time' episode, and that was strictly biological. Still, TV fans wanted to see Spock in love. And, perhaps, that's what we're seeing with Sheldon.

Jim Parsons thinks so. He told Ausiello, "People want to see him cared for in a way that those of us a little more average have been able to experience through love."

Lorre concluded that "...If touching other human beings of any gender is irrelevant to him, why label the thing? Why can't there be a third gender - male, female and Sheldon?" Why indeed?

Jim Parsons, Emmy nominee and star on the critically acclaimed CBS comedy series "The Big Bang Theory," from Warner Bros. Television, will receive the 2010 NAB Television Chairman's Award during the NAB Show Television Luncheon. Sponsored by VCI Solutions, the Luncheon will be held Monday, April 12 at the Las Vegas Hilton.

"Jim Parsons is a singularly gifted comedic talent who provides laugh-out-loud entertainment every Monday night on CBS," said NAB Television Board Chairman Paul Karpowicz, president of Meredith Corporation Broadcast Group. "His breakthrough performance has helped revitalize the sitcom genre, and NAB is proud to recognize him during this year's NAB Show."

Parsons has been nominated for several awards for his role as Sheldon Cooper, a highly intellectual theoretical physicist on "The Big Bang Theory," co-created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady. Cited as "a marvelous discovery, creating the most hysterical misfit since Monk" by TV Guide, Parsons’ portrayal has earned him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, a People's Choice Award nomination for Favorite TV Comedy Actor and a Television Critics Association (TCA) Award for Individual Achievement in Comedy. Additionally, "The Big Bang Theory" won the TCA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Comedy; was selected as one of the programs of the year for 2009 by the American Film Institute; and won the People's Choice Award 2010 for Favorite TV Comedy.

Bazinga! Sheldon Speaks (29-01-2010)

If you had any doubt that geek culture has taken over, check out the numbers for The Big Bang Theory. The writing celebrates our obsession with The Green Lantern, reminds us that we are not the only ones who can say hello in Klingon and keeps us laughing at ourselves. Even the Emmys have taken notice.

I just spoke with Emmy Award nominated actor Jim Parsons, who plays socially awkward -- but eminently loveable -- theoretical physicist Sheldon Cooper. Parsons tells us his theory on why the show is such a hit, when and if love will come to Sheldon and working with co-star Kaley Cuoco. "She's a wonderful verbal dancing partner," he says, though he tells us he is far better at bussing tables. He also gives us a sneak peek at this week's episode. Hint: It involves a ball pit at Chuck E. Cheese.

IGN: I love the show and I watch every week. And I keep thinking about all the people who said the sitcom was dead. You guys seem to have completely revived it. What do you think it is about the show that turned an entire show style on its ear?

Jim Parsons: Well for one thing, I don't think there is any reinventing of a wheel going on here. You know what I mean? I don't think anybody's trying to do anything around here that is in any way changing the old school of thought with the traditional multi-camera sitcom. And that may be one of the biggest things we have going in our favor. We're trying to simply execute as well as possible, a format that's been around. That's been related to live theater.

My thing, and I've always said this, and I'm not trying to defer attention or anything like that, is the writing....I've heard it said that it's a writer's medium, and I completely believe that...and in our case specifically, we only have what they bring. [laughs] We can only play with what they've written, as it were. And we're in a very fortunate circumstance where what they're writing is sincerely funny, you know? And maybe 'sincere' is sort of the key word there. There is a great sincerity in what we're doing here...in deference to the format itself. We're trying to do nothing that different than anything that's been done before. But we're trying to do it as best we can.
